Migration trends and the impact of the Syrian crisis
The net migration index represents the total net migration during a given period, calculated as the number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants, and includes both nationals and non-nationals. Migration tends to increase in countries experiencing economic and political crises, conflicts, and wars. During the first four years of the Syrian crisis, migration rates were exceptionally high due to the war and economic instability in Syria, with migration peaking in 2013, two years after the start of the crisis. However, between 2018 and 2023, immigrants rates began to rise, indicating that deportations from some neighboring countries contributed to these rates.
