Agricultural land (% of land area)

The Agricultural Land Index (% of land area) measures the share of agricultural land in the total land area. This indicator is important for understanding a country's agricultural capacity, food security, and economic dependence on agriculture. Agricultural land includes arable land (land under temporary crops, temporary meadows for mowing or for pasture, land under market or kitchen gardens, and land temporarily fallow), permanent cropland (land cultivated with crops that occupy the land for long periods and need not be replanted after each harvest, such as cocoa, coffee, and rubber), and permanent pastures (land used for five or more years for forage, including natural and cultivated crops).
