# Population, total
The indicator **"Population, total"** refers to the total number of people living in a **country or region**.
This count includes all **residents**, regardless of **legal status** or **citizenship**, but excludes **refugees** who are not permanently settled in the **country of asylum**, as they are generally considered part of the population of their **home country**.
