The indicator **"Population, total"** refers to the total number of people living in a country or region.
- This count includes all **residents**, regardless of **legal status** or **citizenship**.
- It excludes **refugees** who are **not permanently settled** in the **country of asylum**, as they are generally considered part of the population of their **home country**.
